Home style in 2019: embrace trends with authenticity

AS 2018 draws to a close, it's time to look forward to 2019 and what trends will be dominating this coming year.

While I'm not one for slavishly following trends, none of us live in a bubble, so here's a quick wrap on what's in and what's out for 2019.

A word of warning, stay true to yourself and only embrace trends you authentically love.

The trick is to individualise a trend that appeals to you, and less really is more when it comes to most interior styles.

Colour

IN: Pantone's Colour of the Year 2019 (and I'm loving this) is Greenery. Think embracing the uplifting aspect of nature, the growing (pun intended) Jungalow trend - that is inviting nature into the home. Psychologically, I'm also thinking many of us will appreciate the healing aspect of the colour green this upcoming year.

OUT: Au revoir midnight blue and navy blue. (Golly gosh, what are Halcyon House and other highly stylised interior spaces that are positively awash in 2016's blue going to do?)

Furniture

IN: Darker furniture is on the increase - we'll see richer and deeper tones in timber furniture and highlights in 2019. These darker tones of wood also work brilliantly with lush, green highlights (see above).

OUT: Pale, blonde woods as inspired by Swedish interiors. If you believed that "Buy once, buy well" Scandi line, I'm sorry to say, we've all been had.

Decor highlights

IN: Jewel tones and highlights inspired by the stars and the cosmos. Also gorgeous, lush velvet soft furnishings, giving us much needed comfort. Also earthy cork, warm, welcoming terracotta and handwoven baskets, floor rugs - anything au natural is big for 2017.

OUT: Copper, pineapples and quote artwork - "Kill me now!" This is one trend, most of us will happily say goodbye to.
